Buckswood School is the quintessential British boarding school but with an overarching international ethos. The school is located in beautiful countryside near the historical town of Hastings, ‘The Birthplace of England’, on England’s south coast.
Buckswood is home to 250 full-time boarders from the UK and 43 other countries, plus 200 local day pupils, making us 50% British. The boys and girls benefiting from this unique environment are aged 11 to 19 years and are taught junior, GCSE and A Level or International Baccalaureate, plus University Foundation courses. Buckswood is also unique in the UK in offering a full-time Football Academy throughout the academic year, run by a UEFA qualified coach and youth development specialist.
The school’s owner and Headmaster, Mr. Giles Sutton, lives in the school and so it is true to state that the family atmosphere is genuine. That said it is still a traditional British boarding school where students must wear uniform, where the prefect system is upheld and where we are not afraid to push our students towards their ultimate potential.
Buckswood is a small school by UK standards and for us this is very important. It is a school where all the teachers know all of the pupils, where all of the pupils know each other and, crucially, where the Headmaster knows all of the students personally. This allows the Headmaster and his staff to closely monitor each scholar’s progress and development. It is that attention to personal detail that sets Buckswood apart from the rest.
The school’s Latin motto, Ad Vitam Paramus, translates as Preparation For Life and this is really the cornerstone on which the school rests. Yes, we want our students to excel academically and to attend the best universities but we also want them to leave the school with their heads held high and to be able, literally and metaphorically, to ’walk tall’ in the wider world.
Fees and Entry Requirements
The fee for full-time boarding is £8,800 per term (x3) 2015/16 and includes full-board accommodation on campus, tuition, weekly laundry and personal accident insurance. The fees are payable termly in advance.
The main additional costs are for school uniform/sports kit, additional tuition (extra languages, singing lessons etc.), airport transfers and some trips/excursions.
At Buckswood we prefer to assess each student on their own, broader merits, rather than sticking to rigid entry requirements. A personal visit and interview is ideal but, for those who can’t come and meet us, a Skype interview or even copies of latest school reports will suffice.
To secure a place, we require a Deposit of £800 and a Registration Fee of £100, at which stage we will produce the acceptance letters and CAS statement for those requiring Tier 4 student visas. Buckswood School is a Highly Trusted Sponsor with UK Visas and Immigrationand is regularly inspected as part of our licence terms.
Buckswood School – giving your child an unfair advantage.
The campus is located in the tiny hamlet of Guestling, on the south east coast of England and is a 40-acre site surrounded by farms and woodlands. The school is a 10-minute drive from the nearest large town, Hastings and from there to central London (Trafalgar Square) is just 90 minutes by direct rail link.
The main international transport hubs of London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted and London City airports are all within easy reach. We are also just a 45-minute drive from Ashford International station, for links to the near continent and beyond.
On campus we can offer the following extra-curricular facilities:
Riding stables and 7 horses
Indoor heated swimming pool
Indoor sports hall
Full-time, academic year Football Academy
Artificial football/hockey pitch

At Buckswood we make a huge effort to keep our students busy, entertained and, most importantly, challenged. Yes we allow them free time but we would much prefer them to be occupying their time experiencing new things and meeting interesting people. Driving all of this is the knowledge that competition for university places these days is fierce and it is our duty to ensure that a Buckswood graduate is best equipped to be at the head of the line when the selection is made.
Accommodation ranges from rooms of 4 or 5 together for the juniors (ages 11 to 13), to twin rooms for the middle school and then single rooms for our senior, male, A Level/IB students.
The working day opens with a tour and inspection of all of the dormitories by the Headmaster, so that can make eye contact with each student and check that their bedrooms are (reasonably) tidy and that they are dressed appropriately and ready for the working day.
The three main meals are served in the school’s dining hall and the Headmaster eats with his students for every meal without fail. This is no canteen or refectory; instead the food is delivered to the tables by waiting staff. Table manners are very important, we do not deep-fry any food and fresh fruit is available throughout the day.
At the end of main lessons at 4pm, students have an hour of compulsory, silent homework in their classroom, with their form tutor. At 5pm, students can then take advantage of our Access Time sessions; 1-to1 consultation appointments with subject tutors offering academic support and advice for our international students.
Outside of the classroom, the range of sports, additional qualifications, trips and activities mean that boredom is not on our list of options.
