Keeping up your English language skills
After perfecting your language skills in the UK, you may hope you will never need to open an English dictionary again!
But unfortunately, you may find that your language skills turn a little rusty when you return home.
Never fear, there are plenty of ways to maintain your skills.
The British Council’s LearnEnglish website offers free-of-charge support to language learners of all ages and abilities. Have a look at the reading activities, grammar exercises, films, mobile apps and games.
Alternatively, you could do another English language course. There may be lots on offer in your country, or you could enrol on an online course.
Stay in touch with your friends who speak English, or join a UK alumni association. Find out more in our Staying in touch article.
Perhaps the easiest way – and the most entertaining – is to watch English-language TV and films, listen to English-language radio and read English-language newspapers. On the BBC website, for example, you can read the news and watch top UK TV shows free of charge.
Finally, some words of comfort. Although it is easy to forget your English vocabulary, it is just as easy to remember it. Even spending a couple of hours watching a film will bring it all flooding back.
