Loughborough University dates back to the Loughborough Colleges, founded in 1909. Having gained university status in 1966, Loughborough now has nearly 15,000 students, of whom almost 15 per cent are international from over 100 countries.
Loughborough is located in the middle of England and is only 90 minutes by train from London. The University’s campus is near to the town centre and a short bus ride from the railway station. The attractive campus, one of the largest in Europe, has many green open spaces.
Academic Strengths
'Best student experience': Loughborough won this The Times Higher Award in 2008 for the third successive year because the students themselves gave it the highest satisfaction ratings achieved by any British university. The top-quality learning experience and community atmosphere on campus win high praise, while international students appreciate the expert careers and visa advice and the welcoming Students' Union. Loughborough is The Sunday Times University of the Year 2008 and The Times Good University Guide 2009 places it 12th in the UK.
Only Loughborough, chiefly in recognition of the strength of its applied research, and Oxford Universities have received the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize six times. Many departments have gained a grade 5 in the UK Government's Research Assessment Exercise.
The University is divided into the three Faculties of Engineering, Science, and Social Sciences and Humanities, each offering undergraduate, taught Masters and PhD degree programmes. Many Bachelors programmes (65 per cent) offer the option of a year's paid internship.
