Bangor University was founded in 1884, making it one of the oldest and most prestigious degree awarding institutions in the UK. For more than 120 years students from all over the world have graduated from Bangor and as a result gone on to achieve great success in their chosen careers.
Today, the University offers over 250 different bachelor degrees, more than 150 courses at postgraduate level and allows the opportunity for research in around 40 unique areas. Bangor is listed among the top 20 universities in the UK in in thirteen different subject areas which include Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Finance and Accounting, Environment, Agriculture & Forestry, Health, Psychology, Chemistry, Law, Earth & Marine Sciences, Religion & Theology, and Sports Science.
Bangor is consistently placed in the top 50 per cent of UK universities by leading newspapers such as the Guardian and the Times.
Academic strengths
During the most recent UK Government Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), Bangor proved itself to be amongst the very top institutions in the UK. An impressive 77 per cent of all the staff at Bangor who were assessed were placed in the top 4, 5 and 5* grades, demonstrating research of international excellence. Outstanding teaching and academic support from professors and lecturers is a key factor if students are to succeed. The Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA) is conducted on behalf of the Government to rate individual departments within universities. More than 50 per cent of the departments assessed to date in the TQA have achieved the top rating of 'excellent'. In the recent UK wide Student Satisfaction Survey for 2008, Bangor University was placed in the top 10 of UK universities for teaching quality, 85 per cent of all students being satisfied with the teaching on their course.
