With less than 1,000 students, the University has the best staff:student ratio of any UK university. Students are from more than 80 different countries, and friendships made at Buckingham broaden students' experience and give them valuable links for the future.
Graduates have gone on to further study at many of the world’s leading universities including Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge and LSE. You will find graduates from the University of Buckingham in law firms, government offices and multinational companies around the world.
We concentrate on teaching in small groups and operate a four-term academic year. Buckingham lies between Oxford and Cambridge and close to Milton Keynes, which has fast and efficient coach services linking all parts of the country. Services to Oxford, Milton Keynes and London are very regular and reasonably priced.
Academic strengths
Buckingham’s fast-track two-year degrees allow students to progress through their studies at top speed and with reduced cost. One year postgraduate degrees in a range of disciplines offer students the chance to complete a first degree and masters in three years. From May 2008 Buckingham is offering a two year postgraduate programme in Internal Medicine leading to the degree of Clinical MD.
The Times newspaper says Buckingham is ‘well-regarded academically and compares favourably with others for graduate employment, accommodation, staffing levels and library spending.’ A recent survey has shown that the University spends more per student on IT than all but three other universities in the UK. There have been similar findings on library spending. The University aims to ensure that class sizes are kept low, with a staff to student ratio of 1:9 (well above the British average of 1:17).
Facilities
Accommodation is guaranteed for all first-year students. Buckingham has two libraries, at Hunter Street and Verney Park. The Hunter Street library houses the business and humanities collections; the Franciscan library (at Verney Park) holds law and sciences. All student computer rooms are open 24 hours a day. Buckingham's annual expenditure on information provision of £281 per student is the 5th highest among all UK universities.
Postgraduate students have a dedicated study and IT centre on the Hunter Street campus. Students following the computing degree programmes have four computer rooms dedicated to their use.
Student life
The Students’ Union works with social and sporting clubs and societies. Buckingham’s multinational student community has created overseas societies that provide a fascinating insight into different cultures through events and meetings.
The University’s sport and fitness programme offers students of all abilities an opportunity to participate in sport at a competitive or recreational level. The University also maintains local sporting links, playing annual fixtures against Buckingham’s rugby, football and cricket teams. Matches played against alumni and staff teams are also a regular feature in the University's sporting calendar.
The Tanlaw Mill is the hub of student social life, with a dining room, gym and other social and recreational facilities.
