Academic strengthsResearch at Coventry University is classed as ‘world-leading’ by a panel of experts. A Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) is carried out periodically by higher education funding councils, to review the quality of research in UK universities. Each University submits research areas or ‘outputs’ which are assessed by panels of experts who provide a rating of the quality of the research on a rising scale of 1*, 2*, 3* and 4*, with 4* being the highest or world-leading. In the RAE 2008, the quality of research at Coventry University was recognised as world leading with seven out of sixteen areas receiving the highest rating in their overall quality profile. Although the scoring system has changed since the last RAE in 2001, 81% of the areas improved their ratings. In the same period, the proportion of researchers working at national, international and world-leading level has significantly increased and the number of academic staff submitted to the exercise almost doubled.
