Introduction

Founded over a century ago, the Institute of Education is one of the world’s leading centres for postgraduate study in education and related social sciences. A college of the University of London, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world, the IOE is a global hub of ideas, debate and research in education. We welcome more than 1000 international students from nearly 100 countries annually, all of whom become members of the IOE’s global community which includes professionals, scholars and leaders in the fields of education and the social sciences.

Degree programmes

Over 6,500 students, many of them education professionals, come from the UK and across the world to further their careers and broaden their minds at the IOE. We offer a wide range of opportunities, including:

  • more than 50 master’s degrees, such as the MA TESOL (campus-based or online), MA Education and International Development, MA Comparative Education and three MBAs in educational leadership
  • flexibility in most IOE masters degrees; students can combine core modules in their chosen programme with optional modules from virtually any other masters degree offered by the Institute
  • a range of research degrees, including the independence of PhD study, several professional doctorates such as Doctor of Education, and the one-year Master’s in Research
  • for all doctoral students, a comprehensive programme of research training recognised by leading research councils for its quality and rigour

Academic staff and research

The Institute recently celebrated confirmation of its place as the UK’s number one university for education research, and one of the world’s most influential social science hubs. According to the UK government’s 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the Institute has more world leading researchers in education than higher profile universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Leeds, Warwick and York combined. We host over 200 research projects of national and international significance at any one time. Staff working on major research projects often teach classes, host seminars and contribute to research training courses, ensuring students receive every possible benefit of the IOE’s breadth of expertise.
