Overview

Founded in 1872, Aberystwyth was the first university institution in Wales. It has around 10,000 students studying in a stunning campus location overlooking Cardigan Bay.

A number of renowned research facilities are located in the town including the National Library of Wales. It has the largest Arts Centre in Wales and a lively social scene. According to the Times Higher Education's (January 2010) annual student experience survey, Aberystwyth is ranked joint 4th in the Uk for the overall student experience and 4th for Teaching and Learning.

The three main faculties: the Faculty of Arts; Faculty of Science; and Faculty of Social Studies, are sub-divided into various departments. Aberystwyth is particularly strong in theatre, film & television studies; biological sciences; geography & earth sciences; history and Welsh history; management and business studies; celtic studies; and computer science.

The Department of International Politics, the first department of its kind in the world, founded in 1919, is the UK's premier International Relations department, as indicated in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. It has one of the largest graduate schools for international relations in the world, with over 150 Master’s and PhD students.

Sustainable land-use is also world rated.
