Cardiff School of Engineering

Cardiff School of Engineering is recognised as one of the leading university departments in Britain for both teaching and research in Engineering. The School is an integrated department which covers all the main areas of engineering, providing staff and students the opportunity to study a wide range of engineering topics and to work across disciplines.

The staff of the School are internationally renowned for their research achievements and the School has a stimulating and supportive research environment for postgraduate study.

The School’s high standard of teaching is complemented by our outstanding and up to date facilities. In recent years over £20 million pounds has been invested in research laboratories, equipment and teaching facilities. The facilities include spacious and well-equipped teaching and research laboratories, a large library, a student Refectory, an internet café, and extensive computing facilities for students.

The School is located in a modern complex in the heart of the city, close to student residences, the Student Union, the main shopping area, other academic schools, and all amenities.

Academic strengths
Postgraduate taught degree programmes are available across the three main engineering disciplines: Civil; Mechanical; and Electrical and Electronic Engineering. We currently offer 10 MSc programmes: Civil Engineering; Clinical Engineering; Electrical Energy Systems; Communications Engineering and Signal Processing; Geoenvironmental Engineering; Magnetics; Orthopedic Engineering; Structural Engineering; Sustainable Energy and Environment; and Environmental Water Engineering. Various scholarships are available for selected international students, and on selected courses some scholarships are available for home students.

Our degree programmes are amongst the best in the UK, as ranked by league tables produced by various educational supplements such as the Times Higher and The Guardian. In 2007 Mechanical Engineering was ranked top in the UK in the Guardian University Guide, and Civil Engineering was ranked 2nd in the UK in the Times Higher Education table. We are also one of six university members of the prestigious Power Academy.

The School is known for its high quality research and in the last Research Assessment Exercise the School improved its research quality significantly since the previous Research Assessment Exercise (2001), consolidating its position as one of the top 10 research led Engineering schools in the UK.

Over 90 per cent of the School's academic staff were submitted in a very inclusive return and 97 per cent of the research assessed was "internationally recognised".

70 per cent of the research returned was considered "internationally excellent" of which 30 per cent was deemed to be "world leading".

Our research is organised around six Research Institutes, each of which comprises a number of interdisciplinary research groups. Each research group has access to high quality state-of-the-art facilities. The School has 85 academic staff, most of whom have international research reputations, 30 research staff, and some 130 research students. We have developed a comprehensive Supporting Studies programme for our research students.

Industrial collaboration is also vital to our research and our taught degree programmes and we have a close association with a large number of national and international companies. This takes many forms, such as research collaboration and consultancy, sponsorship and industrial placement, as well as educational support through the provision of case studies and equipment. This collaboration and breadth of engineering knowledge will provide you with excellent job opportunities when you graduate leading to a flexible choice of career.

Career prospects
Depending on the area of engineering studied there are a number of employment opportunities including working for: industry and business; consultancies; construction contractors; utility providers; local and national government; software developers; telecommunications companies; medical instrumentation providers; higher education institutions; and the manufacturing sector. Most of the large national and international businesses target our engineering students for recruitment upon graduation.

In addition, the School’s MSc degree programmes provide a pathway to becoming a chartered engineer.
