Goldsmiths is all about the freedom to experiment, to think differently, to be an individual. We bring creative and unconventional approaches to all of our subjects, but everything we do is based on the highest academic standards of teaching and research, and we’ve been part of the University of London for more than a century. Goldsmiths is in New Cross, South East London, which has excellent transport connections to the heart of the capital (Central London is just 15 minutes away by train), and we have nearly 8,000 students taking part in our undergraduate and postgraduate learning opportunities. Our students come from 120 countries, and over 20 per cent come from outside of the UK, helping to create the diverse and welcoming student population that we are so proud of.
Academic strengths
Our unique academic approach comes from the interaction and co-operation of 15 academic departments, together with a number of smaller centres and units. We aim to be at the cutting edge of teaching and research in all our subjects, and are members of the prestigious 1994 Group of smaller, research-oriented universities.
We have an impressive reputation for pursuing intellectual curiosity, and were recently ranked ninth in the UK for world-leading research (shown by the top 4* grade in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise). We have a wide range of innovative and challenging programmes in our specialist areas, covering subjects including art and design, computing, community and youth work, drama, education, English, history, history of art, media, languages, music, social sciences and social work.
