Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a large city-based university with over 20,000 students studying over 300 courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. One of the largest univerisites in the UK with a history that stretches back to 1825 , LJMU was awarded the 2005 Queen's Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher Education, the highest honour a British university can achieve.

From 2007, all of our degree programmes will include measured graduate skills, development and work experience. Through the Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA) exercise, the British Government independently ranks the quality of teaching at British universities. In the most recent scores achieved by LJMU, the following areas were ranked as Excellent: applied social work, building, land and property management; the Business School; communications and media studies; economics; hospitality, leisure, recreation, sport and tourism; molecular biosciences; organismal biosciences; health studies; pharmacy; physics and astronomy; and politics. In addition we are the UK's best School of Sports and Exercise Science.

The City of Liverpool is a city full of passion - for music, sport, culture, live entertainment and nightlife. It is rich in cultural heritage, as demonstrated by receiving World Heritage Site status and being named European Capital of Culture for 2008.

Academic strengths
LJMU has been rated as the number one university in the UK for sport, hospitality, leisure, recreation and tourism by The Times newspaper (September 2002 and 2005).

We are joint first nationally for world leading (4*) research (25 per cent) 85 per cent of our research is of an international standard. Also of interest was the RAE panels rating of research environment as 50 per cent 4* or world-leading stating that RISES provides an exceptional focus for research training and staff development.

LJMU has recently been named the number one university in the north west in terms of the impact of its research.
