Manchester¿s textiles link began when Flemish weavers settled there in the fourteenth century. But it was the Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, along with access to water, coal and overseas markets through the port of Liverpool, that transformed Manchester from a market town into the cotton capital of the world. In fact, Manchester¿s nineteenth century cotton mills famously inspired the political theories of Fredrick Engels.
