Think about a world in which boys can be boys but where in time, they will grow to become ambitious, aspirational, and sensitive, yet gentle-men! Think about a wonderfully caring and nurturing family environment, where they will learn to like learning more. Then, think about igniting their interests in such diverse things as … cooking… cricket …and chemistry!
Merchiston is a school of contrasts: located just five minutes from a village; in a parkland setting, but easy access into the wonderful, cosmopolitan capital city that is Edinburgh. Nearly everything boys could imagine by way of co-curricular activity is here on campus, whilst only a short drive from the nearest beach, ski-slope, sailing school or golf course.
We are a Scottish school, offering the English curriculum, but with a global, outward-looking dimension.
Merchiston delivers an extraordinary, value-added academic experience.
Merchiston has strong and effective approaches to develop each boy’s personal achievement and boasts an impressive record of helping boys excel far beyond their expected results at GCSE/IGCSE and A level.
We are proud to be the highest performing Scottish A Level School which published its results in the Daily Telegraph league tables. These results maintain Merchiston’s exceptional performance at A level over a significant number of years, and demonstrate that our boys, as a cohort, are amongst the highest achieving boys in Scotland.
Merchiston is an extremely nurturing School with the highest standards of pastoral care.
We provide a stimulating, challenging, yet supportive and encouraging environment where your son can grow up surrounded by his friends within our unique House structure. There is never a dull moment as we provide a full boarding programme seven days a week. Merchiston is an extremely nurturing School, achieving the top grade ‘Excellent’ in all areas inspected by the Care Inspectorate in 2012 and 2013; in fact, Merchiston is the only boarding school in Scotland to have achieved this!
Merchiston is about relationships and partnerships – between the boys and the staff, and between the School and the home of each pupil.
Merchiston is a School for each and every type of boy, including those who are keen on sport, but also those who are not games players
Merchiston has a long tradition of sporting excellence and we pride ourselves in fostering the pursuit of excellence in a sport-for-all environment. There are over 20 sports and 30 co-curricular activities on offer for boys of all abilities. Pupils also benefit from strong links with girls’ schools for drama and musical performances, other cultural events and social gatherings.
Merchiston has two successful specialist sports academies. The Tennis Academy has been the Scottish Schools Tennis Champions for the last 5 out of 7 years* and is ranked number two in the UK in the LTA Team Tennis Schools rankings. Due to the Tennis Academy’s outstanding recent achievements, the team was selected to represent Scotland for the first time at the International Schools Tennis Finals in Doha, where the team achieved sixth place in the world. Merchiston has its own Golf Academy which is number one in Scotland and third in the UK.** This year, the Golf Academy represented Scotland at the ISGA Home Internationals in Monmouth, Wales and came a close second place behind England.
The co-curricular programme at Merchiston delivers life skills such as: leadership, teamwork, and mentoring. All boys have the chance to develop a passion for leisure and health, let alone the many opportunities available through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, Combined Cadet Force, prefectship, and Koinonia.
Merchiston also benefits from its strong links with girls’ schools for drama, musical performances, and other events.

‘A balanced curriculum, excellent pastoral care and a high A level pass rate make Merchiston one of the UK’s leading independent schools.’ – UK Boarding Schools
“In every respect – academic, sporting and pastoral – the School has exceeded our expectations, and continues to do so. Above all, it is the Merchiston “end product” that impresses us year after year; the young men who leave the School for university each year are polite, confident gentlemen, whom any parent would be proud to call their son.” - Current Parent
