91% of international undergraduates satisfied with their UK study experience

By Ellie Buchdahl, 1 March 2016

International students at all levels in the UK are highly satisfied with their education experience and more likely to recommend it to friends than those who studied in any other English-speaking country.

Two reports released today show that 90 per cent of international postgraduate research students are highly satisfied with their UK study experience in 2014-15. For taught postgraduates, 89 per cent of students said they were satisfied with the experience.

As well as this, 86 per cent of students on taught postgraduate programmes said they would recommend studying in the UK. For postgraduate research students, this was 85 per cent – also higher than alternative countries.

This was higher than any other English-speaking country, including the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, as well as countries where programmes are taught in English, such as Germany.

The results come from one of the biggest ever surveys into international student experience by the UK Higher Education International Unit.

Work by the same team in December 2015 showed UK education was unbeaten in the eyes of international undergraduates.

Levels of undergraduate satisfaction were at 91 per cent and 85 per cent of international undergraduates who studied here would recommend the UK to others.

When students were asked how satisfied they were with specific areas of their study, the UK also came out top.

International postgraduate students rated the UK as number one for the content of the course, the expertise of supervisors and the research at their university or education institution.

Students at all levels praised the quality of the UK’s colleges and universities and the courses on offer.

In 2014-15, 496,690 international students came to study at UK higher education institutions; around 600,000 more came to do English language courses in the UK.

Vivienne Stern, director of the UK Higher Education Unit, said: ‘The fact that we are the number one destination for recommendations and that we are first for overall satisfaction for postgraduate research students is a testament to how hard universities work to support international students, as well as to the exceptional quality of teaching and research in the UK.’
