| Britain's enfant terrible is known for challenging
society's perceptions of beauty in his shows. He says
of his work, 'I'm not doing this to save the world. I
suppose I have the idea that beauty comes from within.'
|
 |
| Studied: Graduated in 1992 from
Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design with
an MA in Fashion Design. |
 |
| Discovery: McQueen's work was spotted
by the legendary fashion editor Isabella Blow, who bought
his entire graduate collection. McQueen was immediately
awarded an apprenticeship with Savile Row tailors, Anderson
& Sheppard. |
 |
| Work: At the age of 26, McQueen
suceeded John Galliano to become the chief designer at
Givenchy. Now working for Gucci, he is renowned for his
superb tailoring skills. |
 |
| Signature style: McQueen's shows
are strongly themed and have been described as 'images
of beauty heightened through suffering'. Famous for his
low-cut and some say, outrageous trousers, called 'bumsters',
his designs attract a loyal clientele that includes Isabella
Blow and David Bowie. |
 |
| Accolades: McQueen was named the
best British Designer of the Year three times and honoured
as a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British
Empire. Earlier this year, McQueen was named International
Designer of the Year at the Council of Fashion Designer
Awards. |
 |
| British achievements: 'He has changed
British fashion completely, 'says critic Wendy Dagworthy.
'In the early 1990s, fashion was in a bit of a rut and
he brought a hardness and aggressiveness that made everyone
sit up.' |
