 |
| Galliano has been described by Vogue as
'the man who can make the world's most important couture
customers swoon for a £5,000 dress'. Born in Gibraltar
and educated in London, he was the first British designer
to head an established French fashion house. |
 |
| Studied: Galliano graduated from
London's prestigious Central Saint Martin's College with
a first in 1983. His graduation collection, 'Les Incroyables',
inspired by the French Revolution, met with immediate
acclaim. |
 |
| Discovery: Joan Burstein discovered
Galliano and put his designs in her fashionable boutique,
Browns, during London fashion week. The French designer,
Joseph, saw the display and placed an order, sparking
huge interest in the young graduate. |
 |
| Work: Galliano launched his own
label in 1984, and in 1987 won his first British Designer
of the Year award. He went to the house of Christian Dior
where he set about quadrupling sales. |
 |
| Signature style: Galliano creates
historically influenced designs laced with a contemporary
edge. Part romantic, part maverick, Galliano is a couturier
at heart and delicate bias-cut gowns and superbly tailored
suits fast became his trademark. |
 |
| Accolades: Galliano won the British
Designer of the Year Award in 1987, 1994 and 1995. In
1997 he shared the award with Alexander McQueen, his successor
at Givenchy, and was later awarded a CBE from the Queen
for services to UK fashion. |
