Letters from the UK
Yimon Aye and Dun Xiao with TV presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy The International Student Awards Competition, launched by the British Council in 2002, invited students to compose a 'letter home'. Entrants were asked to concentrate on their experience of life in the UK and what they've got out of it.
The winners were announced at an awards ceremony held at the Kensington Roof Gardens, London in April 2003.
The British Council was very impressed by the high standard of entries and everyone who contributed will receive a letter of thanks. The two categories were for international students in higher education and for those at boarding school. Each category had one winner and five runnersup. Yimon Aye, a 22-year-old student from Burma, won the Gold Award and was '…just so excited to have got to the final. It is like a miracle… I know I am so fortunate to be here because there are only a few Burmese students in the UK.'
Yimon wrote in her letter, 'Dear teacher, as you often told us, life is short and we have to make the most of it to live a worthy life.' One of the runners-up, Sujitha Subramanian, wrote, 'I realised that though world history can only be the same thing, each nation teaches its people history according to their own perspective.' The boarding school winner, Dun Xiao from China, is ranked in the top 50 in the National Cipher Challenge - a code-breaking competition. In his letter he wrote, 'Every day has been full. I have broadened my view, developed my English and gained so much knowledge.'
Look out for some published highlights of the letters in the next issue of Club UK.
