Dartmoor's wild ponies
have been roaming
around the park
for many centuries.
The tallest sea cliffs in England form the northern boundary of Exmoor, the UK's smallest National Park. The grass moor of this erstwhile Royal Forest is surrounded by heather-covered hills. Red deer roam the forest and nightjar, merlin and ring ousel are evidence of a rich wildlife. The hill farmers who live off and care for this splendid landscape work among Roman fortlets, Bronze- Age burials and medieval castles. The South West Coastal Path - a national trail - runs along the northern edge of the park.
With 954 square kilometres (368 square miles), Dartmoor is the largest open space in southern England. It is well known for its granite tors, wooded river valleys and vast expanses of wild open moorland.
A landscape of small fields enclosed by stonewalls and hedge banks acts as a buffer to Dartmoor's blanket bog. Used as a stock grazing area for at least 4,000 years, this kind of farming has made Dartmoor worthy of national park status.
The Norfolk Broads, a unique area of water, marsh, fen and woodland, is Britain's largest protected wetland. It's named after the shallow lakes that characterise the area, originally dug in medieval times as a source of peat for fuel. With over 40 of these broads and five rivers forming almost 200km (120 miles) of waterways, the most popular way of experiencing this landscape is by boat, and more than 1 million people visit the area each year.
