TVR races ahead
TVR was established in the late 1940s by a brilliant engineer called Trevor Wilkinson (TreVoR)
The reputation of many ground-breaking UK sports cars has been forged on the racetrack. This is undoubtedly the case with TVR, which has become one of the most revered and exclusive brands, as well as the biggest independent UK car manufacturer today.
TVR was established in the late 1940s by a brilliant engineer called Trevor Wilkinson (TreVoR), who firmly established the TVR formula within a decade, with the introduction of the fast and remarkably light TVR Grantura. TVR has specialised in simple and elegant two-seater sports cars, which are also extremely fast, ever since.
TVR's current owner, Peter Wheeler, has upheld the greatest TVR traditions. Every TVR since 1949 has been designed and manufactured on the same premises in Blackpool, and the Lancashire-based company is evidently proud of the fact that they have far more employees per car than any of their competitors. TVR's 750-strong workforce produce around 2,000 cars per year to customer specification and each individual engine has the engine builder's initials on it. As a result of this integrity, craftsmanship and exclusivity, TVRs are in constant demand. TVR's latest success is the Cerbera Speed Twelve, which is capable of an astonishing 240 mph and incorporates the powerful 7.7 litre V12 engine that gives the car its name.
TVR's sports cars are part of the same illustrious tradition that has produced classics by manufacturers such as AC, Lotus, and MG. AC is one of the very oldest UK car makers, founded in 1901, and is above all known for the legendary 1962 Cobra, which has been described as the most fearsome and extrovert sports car of all time. This noisy and spectacular car combined American power (Ford's V8 engine) with the earlier AC Ace's sturdy chassis and was even reckoned to look fast standing still!
