Rover, another UK make of car long associated with solid
performance and workmanship, pioneered a very different sort
of vehicle in the late 1940s. Rover started manufacturing cars in
Coventry, a city forever associated with the UK car industry, in
1900.

 |
| Their most outstanding success has been the Land Rover,
launched in 1948, which sold 250,000 within its first 10 years
of production. The Land Rover series effectively created (and
then dominated) the market for tough and versatile
four-wheel-drive vehicles. Because these vehicles had rust-free
aluminium bodywork and high ground clearance they could
cope with exceptionally rough and uneven terrain, could be
driven through streams and low floods and became invaluable
to farmers, explorers and public services.

 |
| The Land Rover brand was already widely regarded as the 'jewel
in the crown' for Rover before the launch of the Range Rover
luxury 4x4 in 1970, which sold more than 317,000 models
between 1970 and 1995. The faster, more expensive version
launched in 1994 proved to be even more successful. This 'New
Range Rover' has sold in excess of 100,000 and become widely
known as a refined but useful high-capacity estate car.
