Timeless good looks
The MG brand has been sensationally revamped in the last decade
Much lighter and more graceful are the familiar sports cars that carry the MG and Lotus names. These have endured to the present day and have become well-established niche brands worldwide.
MG traditionally made no-nonsense, lightweight and relatively cheap sports cars, such as the MG Midget, MGA and MGB. Because of their timeless good looks and practicality, the MGA and MGB in particular sold remarkably well and established a considerable export market for UK cars abroad, especially in the USA. The MG brand has been sensationally revamped in the last decade, with the launch of the sleek and beautiful 1995 MGF convertible.
A now-famous engineer, Colin Chapman, who had a passion for motor racing, founded the Lotus Company in 1952
The Lotus brand is more often compared with high-performance supercars such as Porsche and Ferrari, Aston Martin and Jaguar. A now-famous engineer, Colin Chapman, who had a passion for motor racing, founded the Lotus Company in 1952.
Lotus has a phenomenal record in Formula 1, which includes seven constructors' championship wins. The success of Lotus's racing and sports cars alike has been largely due to its engineering subsidiary, based in Hethel, Norfolk, which produces parts for many other carmakers, including Vauxhall. This technical expertise has of course been incorporated into Lotus's most outstanding products, such as the 1958 Elite, the 1962 Elan and the 1987 Esprit X180.
