Rankin
David Bailey and Rankin's work spans many controversial decades and their latest collaboration is proving as provocative as ever. Louisa Edwards talked to them about their work, their inspirations and what advice they'd give to anyone hoping to follow in their footsteps.
David Bailey and Rankin's latest collaboration is a show entitled 'Rankin and Bailey Down Under' showing at the Proud Camden Moss Gallery. It is a detailed photographic look at the female body. Both men are highly influential figures in the world of photography. David Bailey is famed for having 'defined the swinging sixties' with his dynamic and imaginative approach to photography. Rankin, often dubbed a 'contemporary Bailey', is one of the most acclaimed young UK photographers today as well as a publisher, film-maker, business entrepreneur and celebrity in his own right.
Studying advice
Anyone starting a career in photography will find it an advantage to be familiar with the latest technology. All photography courses provide the student with a basic grounding in both the business and image side of computing as it relates to photography. The photography industry has advanced fast; you no longer have to spend hours locked away in a dark room. The ability to be open-minded and try all technologies is one of the best assets that an aspiring entrant to the world of photography can have.
If you are looking to enrol on a course then it's advisable to put together a portfolio. You don't need an expensive camera to start taking photos either. The best buy is a manual camera so you can teach yourself and gain confidence with the technical functions of the camera. Once you have a portfolio you can then scan your images into a computer and email them to colleges throughout the UK.They will then assess your work and probably interview you over the phone. Photography BA (Hons) degrees last three years and a master's can last from one to two years.
Sponsorship
No one can tell you that photography isn't expensive, but the good thing is that companies are willing to sponsor students to help pay for camera equipment and films. If you have a project in mind then research and try writing to a selection of companies, for example, Kodak, Fuji or Ilford.
Student awards
If you are looking to break into the photography market then it is a good idea to enter as many competitions as possible.
The AOP/KODAK Student Awards
Now in its twenty-first year the AOP/KODAK Student Awards have long provided a showcase for the photography world's emerging talent. The competition has around 700 entries from university and college students throughout the UK.
