A far cry from his humble Nottingham beginnings, Smith now runs a global business with shops worldwide selling among other things the Paul Smith clothing collections, furniture, fragrances and accessories.

Born in 1946, Paul Smith initially had no intention of entering the fashion world. Upon leaving school without any qualifications or career plan, it was a chance job in a clothing outlet that gave Smith an insight into the world of fashion. Within three years Paul Smith had opened his first boutique in the centre of Nottingham.
Initially selling other designer labels, the boutique featured early Paul Smith designs. As Smith sought to realise his dream of establishing himself in the world of fashion, he enrolled in evening classes in tailoring at his local college. He began to produce the kind of clothes he wanted to sell in his shop and since then, Smith's rise up the fashion ladder has been nothing short of astounding. Extending first to London, and soon after to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Paris, Milan and New York, Smith has established himself in fashion capitals all over the world.
Since the opening of his first men's wear shop in 1970, Smith has designed women's wear, children's wear, accessories, luggage, spectacles, underwear, toiletries, rugs, furniture, pens and watches.
Smith continues to exhibit his collections all over the world and remains both the designer and chairman of Paul Smith Ltd. Paul Smith has achieved honours for his work within the fashion industry with, among others a CBE (Commander of the British Empire), the honorary Freedom of the City of Nottingham, the Queen's Award for Industry and most recently a Knighthood.
