'Teaching methods in the UK offer students the widest chance to fufil their potential. Innovative techniques encourage students to think for themselves, with technology widely used to support self-study.'
The UK has a long history of offering high quality teaching to students from around the world. With global experts, state-of-the-art equipment and innovative methods, the UK is at the forefront of learning development.
The teaching methods you will encouter may differ depending on the level you study at and the subject you choose:
At boarding school, students will usually attend six to seven lessons a day (around 50 minutes each). These lessons will be in a classroom, laboratory or workshop with other students as well as a teacher. The teacher may ask you to answer questions and will usually set work during the session for you to complete. In the evenings there will be designated homework time known as 'prep.' UK boarding schools also place a large emphasis on extra-curricular activities, such as sports, music and drama, and time will be designated for these.
If you are studying at an ELT school, you will usually have English lessons with a small group of other students, or sometimes on a one-to-one basis. You will be encouraged to speak as much as possible and lessons will run throughout the day.
At an FE college you will be given a bit more freedom in the classroom but still receive lots of support. Your teacher or lecturer will guide you through the session and there will be more opportunities for discussion, plus longer homework assignments. You will also be expected to carry out more independent learning. Lots of FE colleges have strong links with the business and industry world and aim to give you the skills you need for your chosen career.
At HE level you will usually have a mixture of tutorials, seminars, lectures and (if you are studying a practical subject) workshop or laboratory experience. For some subjects, you may go on field trips or research days. At HE level you will be questioned and examined on your work and you'll be required to do several hours of private study every day. Many courses require students to complete a dissertation (extended essay on a specific subject) in order to demonstrate that they can work independently and reach a required level.
Broaden your mind
Whatever your level of study, if you choose to study in the UK, then you'll find that teaching methods are designed to help you get the most from your course. From GCSEs to PhDs, teaching methods in the UK cover a wide range of options.
One of the most distinctive aspect of UK teaching style is that students are encouraged to think and learn for themselves. Your teachers and tutors aren't always looking for the perfect answer. Instead they will be looking for students who can problem solve, think creatively and show initiative.
Of course, academic excellence is still important and you will often be expected to work on your own or with a small group of fellow students. You may be asked to write regular reports or essays, or prepare presentations to share with your class.
Excellent facilities
The UK uses innovative teaching methods and interactive learning styles to ensure students get the most from their education. Methods include question and debate sessions plus tailored tutorials, meaning that UK students learn excellent communication skills alongside their academic subjects.
UK teaching facilities range from place to place, but nearly all institutions have a library, study areas, computer facilities and lecture halls. Many also have high-tech laboratories, research facilities and learning resources. This will help and encourage you to reach your full potential and give you the tools you need to explore your subject.
A world of opportunity: links with industry
The UK education system also has excellent links with industry and many colleges and universities offer work placements for students studying practical courses. These allow you to combine classroom learning with workplace experience, helping you gain valuable skills and expertise.
Whatever level you are studying at, UK teaching styles are designed with your well-being and success in mind. You'll find that the UK's friendly, creative and innovative teaching styles are a great way to learn and help set you on the path to academic success.
Success through support
Although a strong emphasis is placed on personal work, it's important to remember that a lot of support is available too. Your teachers and your institution can help you both academically and personally if you are finding anything difficult, and they are always on hand to point you in the right direction. You may even be able to organise extra lessons or feedback sessions.
Many UK institutions use interactive resources to support their courses. You will often be able to find study support online which may include lists of resources and links, course blogs or social media group information. All of these are great ways of finding help and guidance for your subject. You can find out more on the Education UK support and settling in page.
