UK religion
The United Kingdom is a truly multi-cultural and multi-faith society.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) 2001/2011 census for England and Wales:
  • Around 33 million people describe themselves as Christian, a broad term that includes Protestants, Catholics, Methodists and Baptists and other groups
  •  The other main religious groups are Islam (2,750,566 people), Hinduism (823,022), Sikhism (429,949), Judaism (270,159) and Buddhism (255,106)
  •  14.1 million people reported that they do not follow a religion
Please also see the figures for Scotland and figures for Northern Ireland.

In the UK, it is common for people to wear their chosen religious dress (e.g. a head covering) and observe religious festivals or days.

In large towns and cities across the UK, you will find places of worship for all the major faiths, including mosques, temples, synagogues and gurdwaras.

You will also find religious social groups, which can be great places to worship together and make friends. You may also find that your school, college or university runs religious social groups.

In very small towns and villages, you may find only Christian churches and social groups, however because the UK is a small country, you are never more than an hour or two away from a major town.

Public places such as hotels, hospitals and airports often have prayer rooms which anyone can use, as do most universities, schools and colleges.
