In the QS World University Rankings 2012/13, four of the top six universities in the world are in the UK. The University of Cambridge, University College London, the University of Oxford and Imperial College London join Harvard and MIT as the world’s top universities, pushing Yale into seventh place.

Overall, the QS research shows that 30 of the world’s top 200 top higher education institutions are in the the UK (England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). The main criteria for these rankings are teaching quality, reputation, research and graduate employability.

The world rankings show that UK universities consistently perform well, and their excellence continues to grow. According to John O’Leary, a member of the QS global academic advisory board, this could be down to their research output: UK universities achieve higher citation rates - one way of judging effectiveness of research.

Other criteria that the QS rankings consider include teacher-student ratios, and international faculty and student representation. The UK’s very high scores show that student welfare and establishing an international reputation are core policies of many UK universities.

Quality and excellence

World-class teaching, student satisfaction and future employability are of primary importance to UK universities, and courses are subject to rigorous quality assurance.

With some of the world’s newest and greenest facilities, the UK has a strong reputation for innovation. For centuries UK universities have been at the forefront of research and development, and their academics are respected across a wide range of fields. And multi-million pound investment means that UK universities remain at the cutting edge of international higher education.

Students have a huge range of subjects to choose from - from creative arts and design to space engineering, computer and mathematical sciences to MBA and communications, health and medicine to architecture. It all makes the UK stand out as a diverse and inspiring study destination.

Student satisfaction

International students in the UK have reported very high levels of satisfaction. In 2011 a NUS/HSBC survey found that 91% of students rated their teaching and learning experience as either good or excellent.

International students confirm the prestige of UK qualifications - according to HESA (the UK’s Higher Education Statistics Agency) 428,225 international students from 200 nations enrolled at UK universities in 2010-11.  

Graduates from UK universities are also thriving in the job market: the QS rankings show that employers highly rate qualifications from UK universities.

Education UK has interviewed hundreds of international students for its guides and magazines. A common thread in those interviews is the students’ enjoyment and satisfaction with their experience of learning in the UK. And added to that is the independence inspired by the UK’s diverse culture and international outlook: all in all, a great preparation for a global career.
