With over 1000km of coastline, the north-west borders Scotland to the north and the beautiful Pennine mountains to the south. The region’s capital is the vibrant city of Manchester, home to outstanding architecture such as the gothic town hall, built in 1877, as well as two world-famous football teams, Manchester United and Manchester City.
 
The north-west has long-established links with the Brit-pop music scene and is the birthplace of many famous recording artists such as Oasis, Take That and The Zutons. The region’s most famous musical export, The Beatles, is arguably the best-selling pop group of all time. It is hardly surprising that their home city of Liverpool was named the European Capital of Culture in 2008.
 
Northern-English accents and dialects vary from city to city: for example, Liverpool has its famous ‘Scouse’ accent. Many international students have fun learning these new dialect words and the ways of pronouncing them!
