'Dream Lab 2012: The Future of Eating 2012'

Imagine a world where our relationship to food has changed. Where the scientific developments in food that we can already see - laboratory grown meat, genetically altered vegetables - are everywhere and commonplace. A world four decades into the future, where we look back at what food meant to us in 2012 and laugh. Because what we eat, where we eat it, how we eat and why we eat have all changed.

The first Dream Lab challenge asked the competing teams from 25 leading Chinese universities to explore the science of Sleeping and Dreaming. For Dream Lab 2012, the UK team of expert judges has chosen a second theme that engages all of us and is at the forefront of current scientific research: The Future of Eating.

The project invites students to take up the challenge of imagining responses to one of the most important questions we face: in the year 2050, what will be our relationship to food? How will we respond to and perceive the simple act of eating? How can we face the challenges of a growing population? What might the provisions of biotechnology offer? What are the ethics and possibilities underpinning lab-grown food?

The Brief

The Dream Lab team invite interdisciplinary teams to join the project and develop their response to the challenge: how can you creatively communicate and explore the science and technology that will determine future of eating? How can your idea be communicated to, and inspire, a wide public audience to take a greater interest in these issues?

Research and Background:

A few questions to consider as starting points include:
What will we eat in the future, how and why?
What would the farm of the future look like?
What would the restaurant of the future look like?
What new opportunities will biotechnology create for eating in the future?
Can we learn from other animals or plants new ways of storing and using food?
What is eating? Can machines eat?
Is there anything we should never be allowed to eat?

These questions are meant to encourage the kind of thinking that should act as a framework for initial ideas, encouraging teams to think about and re-evaluate notions of food and eating at the most fundamental level. We ask the group to keep track of their responses to these and other questions they may think of during the course of their initial research, all of which may go into the first stage submission.
