Leaving home in general can be a very emotionally draining experience especially when you are moving to another country to start new life as a student. One key point to remember is that there is an answer to every question you may have, do not hesitate to ask in situations where you lack understanding.

Applying: The application process is fairly easy and you can do this yourself or with the help of a family member. Also another effective method of applying is by using an agency that specialises in this area of work. There are several credible agencies in the major cities of the world. It is also helpful to enquire if your university has a liaison office in your home country.

Tips: Make sure you have all your necessary documentation such as your passport and exam results in both originals and photocopies

• Moving: The build-up to your departure can be a very exciting period. Remember to have a little check list that you can cross out as you accomplish each task. Some universities provide new students with a list of essential materials they may need and it is important to procure as many of these items as you can because they may come in handy at a future date. Have a thorough look on the website for advice they may offer.

Tips: Make sure you have your correct flight details and arrive at the airport in time. Do not forget to carry a few packs of instant noodles along with you!!

Advice for having a great time in the UK

• Make new friends; try not to isolate yourself from other students. Mixing with fellow new students takes off the pressure of being lonely and helps you settle into your new life in the UK.

• Participation is a great way to get involved; Take part in as many welcome week activities as you can. Trips and excursions are very helpful and informative; you get to know new places and also serve well for tourism purposes.

• The 3 S' – study, socialise, stay safe.
