'My experience of moving to the UK . . .'
Hello! My name is Eliza Wong. I am a current second year student studying psychology at the University of Nottingham. I am originally from Hong Kong. However, my family decided to move to UK when I was fourteen (2006). I did my key stage 3, GCSEs and A levels in the UK, therefore I must say, I am quite familiar with the education system here. In comparison to HK, UK education is definitely more stress-free and diverse. It offers many subject choices and promotes students to be well-rounded so they can discover their interests and strengths. Personally, I found that UK has this special kind of atmosphere that motivates me to study harder. Perhaps it the amount of green you see everywhere which makes me feel really peaceful.
Over these few years of living in the UK, I have made a lot of good friends that I know would last for a lifetime. Especially after I have gone into university, I have met so many friends from different parts of the world. Even though we are different in so many ways, but friendship can be formed no matter where you come from and what background you have. I am really glad that I have had this opportunity to meet people from all over the world and feel I have discovered more about myself.
When I first came to the UK, I was upset because I had to leave my home and my friends behind. I found it very difficult to adapt to the new environment, the lifestyle, the language and even the climate. It was very tough in the first few months. However, as soon as I started school and started to make friends, it became easier for me to settle. Thinking back all these years now, I am confident in saying that I have not regretted a single moment living in the UK.
One of the many benefits of studying in the UK is that, it is fairly close to Europe. For those who love travelling, it is a bonus as you get to travel to many countries for a relatively low cost. Last year, I travelled to Venice (Italy) and Benidorm (Spain). I would recommend making the most of the short distance and seeing as many places as possible whislt studying in the UK.
