The qualifications you need depend on the course you want to study. You should have completed at least 13 years of education in your own country or in the UK, and have taken pre-university qualifications equivalent to UK A-levels, Scottish Highers or National Diplomas.

If you haven’t got these qualifications yet don’t worry – you can still aim for undergraduate study in the UK but you may need to do a preparatory course first. Try searching for a career-based or pre-university course in the Search tool, to the top-right of this website.

Entry requirements for English language courses

There are many courses available to international students - from beginners to those who are practically perfect! You can also come for a short course during your holidays, or for an intensive year-long course, or many other options.

As a result, each language course and school will set its own entry requirements.

Improving your English language skills

If you want to study at further or higher education level in the UK (i.e. at a university or college) you may need to demonstrate your English language skills before you can be accepted onto a course or gain a visa.

To find out if this is the case, ask the university or college you are interested in studying at.

They may ask to see proof that you have reached their required standard by setting you a test, or by asking for an English language qualification.

Information about recognised English language tests can be found at:

You could either do a course in your own country, or you could study a language course in the UK.

You can search for English language courses in the UK in the course finder, to the top-right of this website.
