Staying in touch

'Many graduates of UK institutions keep in touch with old friends through alumni associations. These groups often organise events such as reunions or fundraising days for former students.'

One of the best things about studying in the UK is the chance to make friends with people from different cultures and countries. But how do you stay in touch after your course finishes?

Most institutions have alumni networks or associations. (Alumni is the plural term used for graduates of schools, colleges and universities. Originally a Latin word, alumnus, meaning pupil.) Alumni associations help graduates of their particular school, college or university to keep in touch. This can be through reunions, fundraising days, or social networking sites such as Facebook.

It's worth contacting your institution to see what is on offer and making sure they have your contact details so you are updated about new events.

Another option is to join an alumni association for graduates in your country who have studied in the UK. The British Council organises many such associations. You can find out more by contacting your local British Council office.

The bonds with friends, and the contacts that you make, while studying in the UK will be some of the strongest that you form in your life. If you stay in touch, the friendships can last a lifetime!
