Advice on finding a job in your own country

'The internet has made it easier to search for jobs from afar. It's a good idea to ask friends and family with local knowledge to keep a lookout for the kind of jobs you're looking for.'

Students searching for jobs on the internet
Your hunt for a good job can start while you are still an international student in the UK.

You may find it hard to find the time to search for jobs on the internet while you are studying, and it can be difficult to know when job opportunities come up back home. So it's a really good idea to boost your internet search with help from friends and family who have local knowledge and are on the spot, and who know the kind of work you are looking for.

There are several other ways to keep up with jobs that are advertised back home, including:
  • Visit the careers service at your institution before you leave the UK. They may be able to provide guidance on suitable careers websites or organisations in your own country.
  • If you're aiming for a career in an international organisation, get in touch with them to find out about opportunities in your own country.
  • Identify employers in your chosen field who recruit in your own country and ask to be placed on their recruitment mailing lists.
  • Use professional networks such as LinkedIn to advertise your qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience.
  • Look out for graduate recruitment fairs in your home country and make appointments to speak to organisations who might be exhibiting there.
Employers in your home country might also want further details about how your UK qualification maps on to those available there. If you have problems explaining your qualification, you can direct them to the section A UK education on the Education UK website to learn more.
